Oneyplays Animated: The Manganomicon (Unfinished Fan Film + BTS)

An unfinished OneyPlays animated based on a twitter post that unfortunately no longer exists. It was originally meant to be a lot longer and there was going to be a second scene, however the second scene's file became corrupt somehow and the character armatures were broken. Overwhelmed with defeat at the time, I made the awful mistake of deleting the blend file without asking for help first. Despite how big of a production failure this animated was, I still had lots of fun making it!

A major visual theme I was playing with here was the contrast between the photorealism of the main cast and the scribbly toon rendering of the manga monsters. The creatures from the book use an NPR shader that is stylized to resemble crude 3D illustrations, and in the first scene their outlines were rotoscoped with 2D animation. In the unfinished second scene, however, the rotoscoped outlines were replaced with layer weight outlines directly integrated into the NPR shader to save time. The creatures themselves are based and named after the characters shown in the actual book they are reading, but are given grotesque designs that occasionally parody pop culture horror characters (you can probably guess which ones).

As you might have imagined, there was lots of cut content due to the issues experienced during the fan film's creation. Originally there were going to be three additional monsters; Funny Runner, Crabby Cathy, Casual Teen, and Casual Queen. Although three of the monsters managed to make it into the unfinished second scene, Crabby Cathy was less lucky, as her model was overwritten by accident. The second scene was planned to end with the penis creature from the first scene returning as a giant mutated monster, only to be slain when Oney throws a jar of boiling milk at it. Only a single segment of the final sequence was rendered, albeit in preview mode.
